Corporate and Social Responsibility

Companies aren't just employers but stewards of society who seek ways to create social and environmental benefits while pursuing organizational goals.

While CSR may look different for each organization, Intercon Messaging’s mission is to do well by doing good. With every decision, we consider factors like our people, profitability, the environment and our community. Whether sponsoring a local organization or supporting a community event, our commitment builds relationships within the company and the larger community. And whether the involvement begins with an employee’s commitment to a particular cause, event or idea, such activities can have a positive upside.

By learning from these initiatives and taking a values-driven approach to business and community, our organization thrives and grows.

Social responsibility is the backbone of everything we do at Intercon Messaging and has been since 1996.

CSR, ESG and SES

Corporate Social Responsibility started early in my life. I grew up on a mixed farm in northern Alberta. Often, we picked bottles with my mother, took them home, washed them and then took them to town for our bottle refund. In those days, companies refilled the bottles. There was a return program set up in Alberta, and back then, the refund was spending money for us kids.

There was also a lesson in that exercise, as we were never allowed to just pick the bottles; we also had to bring the garbage home too.

Pat Vos, CEO

  • Intercon Messaging is a private company. Leadership is studied, practiced, encouraged and supported. Regularly we review Leadership vs. Management from Resourceful Manager. Clarity about which hat to wear helps all of us maintain a safe, fun, and educational workplace with an enviable corporate culture.

  • Education and learning were a priority for our family. Post-Secondary Education was not optional. My grandmother, the single most influential person in my life, was pioneer doctor Dr. Mary Percy Jackson.

My parents were graduates of the Vermilion School of Agriculture. After a brief stint at SAIT, I ended up at NAIT, a tech school. I graduated with a two-year technical diploma in Pollution and Environmental Control, a second-year option of the NAIT Biological Sciences program. I walked away with my female athlete of the year trophy and set out to “Clean up the World." It was May 1974.

“Cleaning up the World” quickly became an ingrained behaviour. Annually, "Crew Intercon” completes our annual ditch cleaning of the mile of highway we’ve adopted for the last nine years.

Intercon recycles, reuses, and reduces. Planting trees on the farm to create shelter for crops, livestock and to reduce snow drifting across access roads was a regular occurrence in our world. My mother still relocates trees!

  • In recent webinars, the corporate public board of directors has introduced the acronym SES: Social and Emotional Skills.

We teach our people to recognize the dignity of their work and to embrace their success. Behaviours of accepting personal responsibility are modelled and taught at every opportunity. We teach resilience, patience, and perseverance to help our team develop grit. We have qualified in-house facilitators that teach Emotional Intelligence and soft skills, which help our people develop healthy workplace behaviours.

When I purchased this business, implementing appropriate workplace behaviours started immediately and has evolved continuously since. Creating a safe, peaceful and effective workplace was why I acquired the company.
